A male pedestrian has died following a crash involving two lorries on the M1, between Junctions 23 and 23a. The motorway is closed northbound between junction 23 and junction 23a for East Midlands Airport. The crash happened in Leicestershire at around 9.30am today. The man, who was on foot, was hit by an HGV on the northbound carriageway near Junction 23 for Shepshed. Nobody else was injured, Leicestershire Live reports. A police spokesman said: "The pedestrian, a man, sustained fatal injuries. No one else was injured."It is expected that the motorway will be shut for several hours.
An East Midlands Ambulance spokesman said: “We received a call at 9.33am on January 21 from our colleagues in the police force requesting medical assistance at a road traffic collision on the M1 northbound, between Junction 23 and Junction 23A.“We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, a crewed ambulance and a doctor in a car.”In a statement released before the fatality was confirmed, Leicestershire Police said: “Motorists are being advised to avoid the northbound carriageway of the M1 motorway following a serious collision at junction 23.“The collision occurred just before 9.30am today (Monday, January 21) and the northbound carriageway of the M1 at junction 23 has been closed off to allow emergency services to deal with the collision. Motorists are being diverted on to the A512 towards Ashby then the A42 northbound back on to the M1.“Further details about the vehicles involved and any injuries will be released as and when we are able to.”Anyone with information which may help the investigation is asked to call Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting incident 148 of January 21.
