Swimming... Soviet style

Synchronised swimmers are seen in perfect formation inside Soviet-era swimming pools in Slovakia in a new book. Maria Svarbova photographed young men and women in bright swimsuits in various poses before editing her images to give the illusion of multiple swimmers.
Some images show them lined up by the pool's edge, preparing to dive in or doing synchronised stretches on the tiled floor while others capture them sitting in a group or posing by lockers. The photographer, who used facilities in her native Slovakia for the long-running project, aimed to evoke a feeling of joylessness in what is usually a fun place to be. The photographs showcase the 'sterile, geometric beauty of old pools' and are featured in her book Swimming Pool. 'The figures are mid-movement, but there is no joyful playfulness to them,' Svarbova said.'Frozen in the composition, the swimmers are as smooth and cold as the tiles of the pool. Despite the retro setting, the pictures somehow evoke a futuristic feeling as well, as if they were taken somewhere completely alien.'
