A screaming newborn baby with his umbilical cord wrapped around its neck has been pulled alive from a DRAIN. The heartbreaking discovery was made by a milkman who was passing by when he heard the baby's cries from the drain in southern India.
Captured by an onlooker, a video shows a woman known only as Geeta, reaching into the storm drain to pull the tiny infant out. After carefully unwrapping his umbilical cord from around the traumatised baby's neck, Geeta then cleans the tot in a bowl of water. She told local media in Tamil Nadu state: "I reacted immediately, it was spontaneous.

As a dozen or so residents and bystanders looked on, I peeped through the drain, an iron pipe around one foot in diameter, and saw the child inside."It was painful to see a child dumped like that. It appeared that the person who abandoned the boy had deliberately pushed him deep enough inside the drain so he would be out of sight."I don't think there was any feeling for the child, because the umbilical cord seemed to be tied around the neck so it would slowly kill him."The baby was rushed to the local Egmore Hospital where doctors discovered that he was having trouble breathing.

Geeta, who lives with her daughter, has said she wants to name the boy Suthanthiram which means freedom, as he was found on India's Independence Day. He made a full recovery and is said to be healthy and doing well. According to local media, the hospital has received dozens of requests to adopt the baby after the video of his rescue was posted online. Police are yet to make arrests but state and an investigation have been launched.
