Police officers were left stunned when they discovered the driver of a car involved in a high-speed chase was a 12-year-old girl.
Officers in New Mexico, USA, were on another call when they spotted a car driving erratically and decided to pull the vehicle over. However, the driver refused to stop and the officers ended up chasing them on a highway. The driver nearly hit two police cars before eventually crashing into a speed sign leaving the front windscreen completely shattered. But they were shocked the find the driver was a young girl. She was with three of her friends, aged 12 and 13, and they all reportedly smelled of alcohol. In a video of the arrest, an officer is heard saying: "Put your hands up now! Put 'em up! Get on the ground, now!"Police say the girl told them she waited until her grandfather fell asleep before taking his car and going to pick up her friends to drink alcohol. Officers found Twisted-brand hard iced teas and Smirnoff inside the car."For young folks to get ahold of A) alcohol and then B) a vehicle and then adding them both together, normally this situation is very...often it doesn't work out as well as it did in this case,” Police Chief Brian Peete told local news station.

It's scary. It's concerning. There's a lot of mixed emotions with it because we don't know the situation, the dynamics at home."In a clip, an officer is heard telling the girl's father: "We're trying to figure out where they got it from."That's what I want to know because we don't drink at my house,” he replied. He goes on to tell them: "If you've got to keep her in jail tonight if you think it's right, do it.”The girl was charged with DWI and for leading police on that chase. All four were charged for underage drinking.

It's unclear what the kids' blood alcohol content was or where they got the alcohol from. Alamogordo police are working with CYFD and the district attorney's office to investigate further.
