A PETITION to keep a straight-A student with a place at Oxford University in the UK has smashed 90,000 signatures.Friends of 21-year-old 'genius' Brian White are campaigning for a change to his immigration status which will allow him to stay in the country where he has lived for six years. The Wolverhampton resident grew up in a Zimbabwean orphanage and was adopted by the White family, coming to the UK aged 15. At that point, he was only granted 'limited leave to remain' in the country sixth form the bright spark got three A*s and an A in triple science and maths. But when he tried to take up his place studying chemistry at Lady Margaret Hall he found he was ineligible to receive student finance because of his immigration status. He has now applied to the Home Office to become a British citizen. Originally he and his supporters feared that if that application was unsuccessful he could lose his offer from Oxford, but the university has now confirmed he can defer his place. Either way, while his application is still pending he still faces deportation back to Zimbabwe. He said: "I haven’t been there in seven or eight years, I don’t know anybody there. I don’t have any connections."A Home Office spokesman said: "We understand the urgency of Mr White’s case and have contacted him to reassure him that we are looking to resolve his application as soon as possible.".
