These Alabama Moms Did A Photoshoot To Tear Down The Stigma Of Breastfeeding.

A group of Alabama mothers was tired of the shame thrown at mothers who breastfeed in public. So, they came together for a compelling photoshoot to tear down the stigma. Nine mothers, who are a part of the Chocolate Milk Mommies of Birmingham support group, got together to take a series of photos with the goal of normalizing breastfeeding in public.“We wanted to do something to capture the essence of how natural breastfeeding is,” said Charity Moore, one of the mothers in the shoot, told the Huffington Post. “We used crowns to remind each other that we are queens and to keep one another lifted. We chose to come together to normalize breastfeeding. And it’ll never be ‘normal,’ unless it’s seen.”To help further their campaign, the photos, which were taken by Lakisha Cohill, were accompanied by the hashtag, #blackwomendobreastfeed. Another mom in the pics, Rauslyn Adams, said that she still breastfeeds her 2-year-old child and is shamed for doing so. She is hoping that this photoshoot helps people see breastfeeding as natural in the black community.“This photo was for awareness, for all the women who don’t have support in breastfeeding. This photo is also for women of color because breastfeeding is considered taboo in our community.”
