When a breastfeeding passenger ran out of formula for her baby during a flight on Tuesday, Patrisha Organo, a flight attendant for Philippine Airlines, stepped in. With the help of supervisor Sheryl Villaflor, the 24-year-old escorted the mother and child to the plane’s galley, where she breastfed the infant with her own milk.“I heard an infant’s cry, a cry that will make you want to do anything to help,” Organo, who was on-board to get qualified as a Cabin Crew Evaluator, wrote in a Facebook post early Wednesday morning.
After approaching the baby’s mother and asking if everything was okay, she learned that the mom didn’t have any more formula milk to give her child.“I felt a pinch in my heart. There’s no formula milk onboard. I thought to myself, there’s only one thing I could offer and that’s my own milk. And so I offered,” said Organo, who describes herself as a breastfeeding advocate. “The baby started rooting, she was so hungry. I continued to feed the baby until she fell asleep… the mother sincerely thanked me. As a mother herself (she has a nine-month-old daughter at home), Organo personally understands the struggle of being a breastfeeding mom. She said, “In my early days of breastfeeding, I would really like to give up, but because I have the strong support of my husband, I kept going. It was a storm of emotion and without my husband’s support, I could never do it.”Organo ended her post, which now has over 147,000 likes and 30,000 shares, with a heartfelt statement: “I was right, the flight’s gonna be special, so special not only because I got qualified as an Evaluator but I got to help. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of mother’s milk.”
