Detroit High School Senior Accepted into 41 Colleges, Awarded $300,000 in Scholarships

High school senior Michael Love knows what it’s like to have doubts in himself. Yet, his is a story that should inspire anyone who wants to overcome challenges. For Michael, this meant gaining acceptance into 41 colleges and being awarded over $300,000 in scholarships. It wasn’t easy, though. Love struggled in school at first; others would sometimes try to discourage him. “I got told a lot when I was younger I couldn’t do this, I couldn’t do that,” Love told WXYZ. “So I just wanted to show people I’m better than what they think I am.” Michael struggled, and his hard work paid off in the end. He proved them all wrong. Love attends Cornerstone Health and Technology High School in Detroit. Aside from being a National Honor Society member, he also plays varsity basketball and has a job after school. He applied to over 50 colleges in all. “I thought he was crazy when he told me he was applying to so many schools,” Love’s mother Michelle Ewing told WXYZ. With his extremely busy schedule, Michael had to take the time to complete all the applications. Yet, when the letters of acceptance started flowing in from all over the country one-by-one, all of their doubt turned into a joyous celebration. “Every time I open up a letter I jumped up and down,” Ewing shared. “We praised God and everything. I’m super proud of him.”“The farthest is probably Arizona. The University of Arizona,” Love told the news outlet. Nor is it likely that Love will have to pay off any student loans. So far, he’s been awarded over $300,000 in scholarships; Michael’s high school was able to waive most of the acceptance fees of his applications, and many colleges offered to foot the bill for his education.“Once he told me my mouth just dropped. I just started crying,” said his mother. Love hopes to be an aerospace engineer one day. So far, his hard work has earned him a good start. Now, with a binder full of acceptance letters, he has a difficult decision to make. Love says he plans to decide where he’ll be heading this fall in the next week or so.
