School uniform row after 90 pupils sent home or put in isolation on first day

A uniform policy led to kids being sent home from Rhosesni High School in Wrexham
Around 90 children were put in isolation or sent home over "inappropriate uniforms " on the first day of term at a school striving to be the best in its region. Dozens of kids were upset on Wednesday after allegedly arriving in trainers and "inappropriate skirts" at Ysgol Rhosnesni in Wrexham, North Wales. Parents were furious with the new policy, which they told Daily Post had descended into "madness".A parent with a child in Year 11, who did not want to be named, said her daughter was punished for wearing trousers that had lycra in. A second pair was also deemed unacceptable for being "ankle grazers".The mum said: "The head is right to enforce policy but there is a fine line between what seems to be acceptable and what isn't. My daughter was put in isolation but they were just sat in the hall all day yesterday."She has now missed two days of lessons as I took the decision to remove her until we can find something suitable but it is a struggle as she is very tall and thin.
She is really upset about it and there are dozens of parents standing in reception and in the car park waiting to pick up their kids over the uniforms. It was a bit chaotic."I just think that they are losing sight of what is important and that is the children's education. They are not cutting anybody any slack - why don't they just issue a letter saying it is not correct and give a time period to correct it rather than effectively excluding and segregating children? It's just madness."Headteacher Andrew Brant, who has only been in the role for seven weeks, brought in stricter uniform rules to a bid to "make Rhosnesni the best school in north Wales".
The school, which serves more than 600 kids, was rated Unsatisfactory by Estyn, the Welsh school watchdog, in its last inspection. But in a statement following Wednesday's drama, Mr Brant said: "In July, I wrote to all parents on two occasions clarifying expectations for the uniform. Colleagues and I were pleased to see that the vast majority of our students arrived today looking exemplary. However, a number of students arrived wearing trainers or inappropriate skirtsTrainers and fashion footwear will no longer be tolerated. Similarly, skirts must be knee-length and not tight-fitting or bodycon in design."Trousers must be smart school trousers; not denim, leggings or skinny cut. All students must wear a blazer and a tie.
Remaining in coats, hats or jackets inside the building will no longer be permitted. Breaches of the uniform policy will result in students being sent home to change and/or confiscation of prohibited items.""In my previous communications with parents, I made it absolutely clear that we would be respectful, yet uncompromising when enforcing our dress code in the new academic year, and before the summer holiday many parents contacted me to express their support for a more rigorous and consistent approach to standards at Ysgol Rhosnesni."I am genuinely committed to making Rhosnesni the best school in North Wales and this will not happen without consistently high expectations for all students. It is encouraging that this ambitious vision is fully supported by the School Governing Body and the majority of parents and students.
