Albanian police have rescued malnourished and diseased animals from the 'zoo from hell' after a government minister in the country saw a report on their plight. Shocking pictures were taken at the Safari Park Zoo in Fier, southwest Albania, showed a 'severely malnourished' lion living in cramped conditions with what appeared to be an untreated eye injury. Other animals, including a zebra, a thin-looking wolf and several deer, were seen locked up in desolate concrete cages in the privately-owned zoological park.

'The Golden Couple' by Marsel van Oosten from The Netherlands is the 2018 winner of Animal Portraits, which is part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The image shows two golden snub-nosed monkeys in their last surviving forest habitat in the Qinling Mountains of central China. It beat over 45,000 entries from 95 countries to win.  Roz Kidman Cox, Chair of the judging panel, said: 'This image is in one sense traditional - a portrait. But what a striking one, and what magical animals. It is a symbolic reminder of the beauty of nature and how impoverished we are becoming as nature is diminished. It is an artwork worthy of hanging in any gallery in the world'

NEW YORK HAS marked its first weekend without a shooting in 25 years, police have said. “We went Friday, Saturday, Sunday without any shootings and homicides,” New York Police Department chief James O’Neill told reporters.“That’s the first time in decades, and that’s something, not just the NYPD, but all New Yorkers can be proud of,” he said.
