The crew over at Co-op Food have gone all 2019 and decided to turn their classic gingerbread man into a gingerbread person and they want the public to choose its name.
They've been putting the finishing touches to the new snack over the last few months, giving it a 'gender-neutral outfit'. They've given us a glimpse of what to expect so you can see for yourself: The Co-op website states: "Our Food team is adding the final touches to a new Co-op gingerbread person, but they've yet to come up with a name."They'd like members to join in and suggest a fitting name for our new little biscuity friend."The plan is to give our new gingerbread fellow some seasonal costume refreshes a distinctively Christmassy look for December and something rather spooky around Halloween for example. So they'll need a name that works for any time of year."We also need to ensure that the name is gender-neutral too. Join in to suggest a name. Our Food team will create a shortlist of the ones they think will best fit the bill and we'll be back to ask you to vote for your favourite next month."You only have until 1 May to suggest a name for the gingerbread person, so you better get thinking. I think there are two ways this can go. There are the names that can traditionally be used for both males and females we're talking your Leslies and your Ashleys. Or newer names that haven't yet taken on gender connotations, like Kennedy or Cassidy. The responses on social media to this have already been pretty varied, with some people seeming less than happy with the whole idea.
So, can the general public be trusted? They did come up with Boaty McBoatface, after all. Still, frankly, I'm excited to see what you lot come up with. Here's a suggestion from someone clearly taking the process seriously: Well, quite.
